The Gitlab debacle

So, today I learned about the debacle surrounding Gitlab back in 2019. The dev behind the app, Thomas, recieved a lot of hate for momentarily blocking Gab users from using Fedilab, but then recending that block because he wanted to remain neutral due to his own beliefs. All hell broke loose, and of course, he was harassed and threatened by the mob.

The result of the hell he’s recieved from social media? He left all of the social networks he was part of. To quote:

I wanted to stop every connections with social networks simply to protect myself.

This is just reinforces my thoughts that social media—the Fediverse included— has become utterly poisoned by so many toxic people that it’s a legitimate mental health concern, even for myself. And given what’s been happening with the RMS debacle, and how the tech industry itself tends to be an absolute cesspool even on good days, I really just don’t want to be part of any social media at all anymore.

Much like Thomas, I want to protect myself. I’m tired of feeling so mentally and emotionally drained at the end of the day. I’m tired of feeling like I’m just going to be a target again, just like when I came out as Trans. It’s not good for my overall health, and I can only assume it’s the same for many others out there.

Stay safe, people. Look out for yourself, because you can’t help others unless you can help yourself as well.
